Riot in Riga, Latvia, 13th of January 2009.

On January 13, 2009 a riot broke out in Riga (Latvia).

The authorities of the country had lost all trust of the population, industry and agriculture had been completely destroyed, and IMF credits wasted and the people could not pay even for their very modest flats. Mass unemployment and misery was the immediate threat for many thousands. Under these circumstances after a meeting organized by opposition parties some of the people tired of the lies told by politicians and powerlessness of the opposition took to radical action. They threw

25th of May in the morning, police evicted squat "Pila" in Ligovsky prospect in St. Petersburg, which had existed for half a year. While police was breaking in, people managed to escape from windows with some valuables, and no-one was arrested. However many valuables were also stolen or destroyed by the cops, for example musical instruments of the squatters. 8 people were living in "Pila" and many activities were organised there. As most Russian squats, "Pila" was clandestine and its existence was not openly announced.

In the evening of March 25 in St. Petersburg an illegal antifascist march has taken place. Over 150 people have taken part, despite extremely harsh weather conditions - the city was in the middle of snowstorm (which probably slowed down the police reaction).

March, 7 at 16:00 several ultra right groups held a picket in St.Petersburg against Kosovo independence near the US consulate.

Some of the picket participants were attacked by antifascists after the picket/ This fairly ordinary event rose a lot of public attention, nationalists calling themselves patriots and Russian Orthodox believers started another hysteria in the media. In this connection we would like to make the following declaration to express our attitude to the event:

Today 16th of March around 6:40 PM local time at exit of metro station
"Kitay-Gorod" around 15 Nazis ambushed with knives 7 people, who were going
to a concert in club "Art Garbage", where Petrozavodsk oi!-band "Nichego
Horoshego" and a number of other groups were to play. As a result of the
attack, a young guest of the concert from Noginsk died from multiple stab
wounds.

Attack was planned in internet, 14th of March in forum of FC Spartak

18th of September 2007 court proceedings started against six anti-fascists,
accused of dispersing picket of fascist front-group "Movement Against
Illegal Migration" (DPNI) 17th of September 2006 in St. Petersburg. Court
has proceeded slowly during the autumn, and up till now prosecutor has not
even announced what sentence he is demanding.

Following anti-Caucasian pogroms in small Karelian city of Kondopoga, which
began when Caucasian mafia murdered local youth, nationalist organisations
tried to flare hatred all around the country. In St. Petersburg, local
anti-fascists found this unacceptable and promptly attacked and outran small

In beginning of October Pasha, anti-fascist activist and straightedger, was
jumped by persons unknown and beaten with baseball bats in Vladivostok. Now
half of his face is totally paralyzed, and in less than two weeks a very
expensive neurochirurgical operation has to be made, something he may not
afford on his own.

We do not know if this attack has to do with is politics - Pasha could not
recognize his attackers, they were all masked and dressed in sports suits.
It is well possible, that attackers were just local gang bangers (gopniks).
In another hand, these days few Nazis go around in bonehead uniform.
